The Raychem MXSU is a heat shrink inline joint for single core polymeric insulated cables rated 12/20(24) kV, manufactured by TE Connectivity. We supply the full MXSU-5 range, covering conductor cross-sections from 25 mm² to 1000 mm² across nine variants. Every kit ships with mechanical shear bolt connectors for conductor and wire shield, so there is no need for crimping tools on site. Download the Raychem MXSU datasheet for full cable dimension tables.

As Ireland’s authorised TE Connectivity/Raychem distributor, we hold stock of the most commonly specified sizes and can source the full range on short lead times. Call us on 057 866 2162 for pricing and availability.

MXSU-5 selection table (20 kV range)

The MXSU-5 series is rated 12/20(24) kV, where 20 kV is the rated voltage (U) and 24 kV is the maximum system voltage (Um). Select the variant that matches your cable’s conductor diameter, insulation diameter, and overall sheath diameter. Dimensions are in millimetres, based on polymeric insulated cables per IEC 60502.

Variant Cross-section (mm²) Conductor dia. (mm) Insulation dia. (mm) Cable over sheath (mm)
MXSU-5111 25-95 5.2-12.0 17.9-26.0 24-38
MXSU-5121 50-150 7.2-15.0 19.5-29.5 27-41
MXSU-5131 95-240 10.3-19.2 22.5-33.6 31-44
MXSU-5132 150-300 12.9-21.6 25.0-34.6 32-46
MXSU-5141 240-400 17.8-24.6 29.4-38.8 38-50
MXSU-5151 500 25.5-27.6 37.2-41.6 48-54
MXSU-5161 630 27.9-32.5 39.2-44.7 50-58
MXSU-5171 800 32.5-35.3 44.2-46.9 58-61
MXSU-5181 1000 38.5-39.2 49.4-53.2 64-67

Cable constructions and dimensions vary between manufacturers. Always verify your cable’s measurements against these ranges before ordering.

Shear bolt connectors and installation

The MXSU joint uses mechanical shear bolt connectors rather than compression fittings. The bolts are tightened with a standard socket spanner, and the heads shear off at the correct torque, giving you consistent electrical contact every time without torque wrenches or hydraulic crimping tools. No tool calibration or maintenance to worry about, either.

The joint sleeve is a triple-layer coextruded heat-shrink tube with integrated impedance stress control. Its compact, short body makes a real difference in tight joint bays, cable trenches, and confined substation pits.

Kits have an unlimited shelf life, so you can hold stock without worrying about expiry dates. That simplifies material logistics considerably on larger projects with phased cable installation programmes.

Standards compliance

The Raychem MXSU range is designed and type tested to CENELEC HD 629.1, the European harmonised standard for cable accessories on extruded insulation power cables from 3.6/6(7.2) kV to 20.8/36(42) kV, and to IEC 60502-4 for joints. The application range is based on polymeric insulated cables per IEC 60502.a

These are the standards utility companies, M&E contractors, and data centre operators in Ireland require for medium voltage cable accessories.

Why buy from Powerpoint Engineering

We are an authorised TE Connectivity/Raychem distributor and have been supplying cable jointing accessories to the Irish market since 1996. Our range includes Raychem 36 kV MXSU joints for higher voltage applications, along with 3M cold shrink joints and the full Raychem cable terminations and separable connectors ranges.

We hold Achilles Level 3 registration (required for ESB Networks and utility sector procurement), ISO 9001:2015 quality management certification, and an INAB-accredited calibration laboratory for post-installation test instrument calibration.

FAQ

What conductor sizes does the Raychem MXSU 20 kV range cover?

The MXSU-5 series covers single core polymeric cables from 25 mm² to 1000 mm² at 12/20(24) kV. Nine variants are available; select based on conductor diameter, insulation diameter, and cable over sheath diameter from the selection table above.

Do I need crimping tools to install the MXSU joint?

No. Each kit includes mechanical shear bolt connectors for conductor and wire shield. Installation requires only a standard socket spanner. The bolt heads shear off at the correct torque, ensuring reliable contact without specialist tooling.

What standards does the Raychem MXSU meet?

The MXSU is designed and type tested to CENELEC HD 629.1 and IEC 60502-4 for medium voltage cable accessories on extruded insulation power cables.

Can the MXSU joint be used on XLPE and EPR insulated cables?

Yes. The MXSU is designed for polymeric insulated cables, including both XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) and EPR (ethylene propylene rubber) constructions. Verify your cable dimensions against the selection table to confirm the correct variant.
