The 3 mA short-circuit current charges capacitive loads faster than lower-output insulation testers, which matters on long cable runs and large motor windings where charge times can stretch into minutes.
Diagnostic test modes
The PI (polarization index) test gives you the 10-minute to 1-minute IR ratio that IEEE 43-2000 calls for when assessing moisture or contamination in motor windings. DAR (dielectric absorption ratio) offers a quicker field screening alternative. SV (step voltage) applies increasing test voltage to expose voltage-dependent insulation weaknesses that a single-voltage spot test would miss. DD (dielectric discharge) measures charge released after the test voltage is removed, detecting thermal damage in multi-layer insulation systems.
A selectable breakdown/burn mode and adjustable alarm limit setting handle more specific diagnostic scenarios. Test results store onboard and download via USB or RS232 to Megger Download Manager software for record-keeping free of transposition errors.
Safety and build quality
The CAT IV 600 V safety rating protects for use at mains origin and upstream of main distribution, a significant upgrade from the original MIT1020’s CAT III 300 V. If accidentally connected to a live circuit, external voltage is displayed and testing is inhibited above 80 V. Capacitive loads discharge automatically at the end of any test.
The rugged polypropylene case achieves IP65 with the lid closed. A quick-start guide printed inside the lid means you do not need to carry the manual to site. The guard terminal is included as standard, providing accurate measurement even where surface leakage is present.
