The Megger FREJA 306 is a six-current-output relay test system for secondary injection testing of protection relays across substations, generating stations, and industrial sites. Built on the proven FREJA 300 platform originally developed by Programma (acquired by Megger in 2012), it adds three high-end amplifier channels that push output to over 100 A for single-phase testing, with six independently controlled currents for differential relay work.
It operates in standalone mode or under PC control via FREJA Win software. We are the authorised Megger distributor in Ireland. Request a quote or call our technical team on 057 866 2162.
Key specifications and current outputs
The FREJA 306 packs four voltage and six current generators into a 23 kg portable unit. All generators are continuously and independently adjustable in amplitude and phase, with no range switching. Every output is overload-proof, short-circuit-proof, and protected against external high-voltage transients.
| Parameter | Specification |
| Standard current outputs (L1I, L2I, L3I) | 3 x 15 A (87 VA per phase) or 1 x 45 A parallel (250 VA) |
| High-end current outputs (Ch1, Ch2, Ch3) | 3 x 35 A (0.5 s on / 1 s off); continuous 3 x 20 A (150 VA); or 1 x 100 A parallel (750 VA) |
| Voltage outputs | 4 x 150 V (82 VA), 2 x 300 V line-to-line, or 180 V DC |
| DC auxiliary supply | 20 to 210 V DC, 75 W |
| Binary inputs | 10 (two galvanically isolated groups of five), 50 µs resolution |
| Binary outputs | 2 x 4 (NO and NC), response-time compensated |
| Operating temperature | 0 °C to +50 °C |
| Weight (instrument) | 23 kg (50.7 lbs) |
| Dimensions | 450 x 224 x 410 mm |
| Mains input | 100 to 240 V AC, 50/60 Hz |
The three high-end outputs are what set the FREJA 306 apart. Compliance voltage up to 50 Vrms makes it possible to test high impedance relays that trip up lesser test sets, including rotating disc and earth protection relays. Three high-end channels in parallel deliver over 100 A at 750 VA. That is serious current from a 23 kg unit you can carry to site.
Standalone and PC-based operation
In Local mode, the FREJA 306 works without a PC. The front panel LCD and navigational dial handle configuration, test execution, and settings storage. The display presents RMS values for all generators simultaneously.
Connecting a PC unlocks FREJA Win’s full instrument suite: Distance, Current, Voltage, Frequency, Differential, Sync, Autoreclose, Transducer, and Transient programmes. No licence key required. The Transient instrument supports COMTRADE, ASCII, EMTP-WAX, EMTP-PC, and Inductic 65 file formats for replaying recorded or simulated fault disturbances. The General programme handles most day-to-day work with up to 25 sequence states and harmonic generation to the 25th order.
For end-to-end testing across substations, the optional GPS200-MGTR synchronises multiple units via satellite timing.
Protection relay types tested
The FREJA 306 handles virtually all protection relay types. Six independently controlled currents make it particularly strong for differential protection (ANSI 87), covering transformer, generator, and line differential relays. FREJA Win’s Differential instrument includes bias characteristic testing, harmonics restraint verification, and a Wizard that catches incorrect settings before they cause unwanted trips.
It also tests distance (21), overcurrent/ground fault (50/51), directional overcurrent (67), frequency (81), under/overvoltage (27/59), synchrocheck (25), autoreclose (79), and DC overcurrent (76) relays, among others. In-field calibration uses the optional FREJA calibration box (CF-90100); only the box itself needs annual traceable calibration, not the instrument.
Existing FREJA 300 owners can upgrade to FREJA 306 specification. For applications needing more than six channels, see the Megger FREJA 549 with up to nine current outputs.

FAQ
Can the FREJA 306 be used without a PC?
Yes. It operates in Local mode using the front panel display and dial. All settings save automatically. For automated testing and advanced features like distance zone plotting or differential characteristic analysis, connect a PC running FREJA Win.
What is the difference between the FREJA 300 and the FREJA 306?
The FREJA 306 adds three high-end amplifier outputs providing up to 35 A per phase or 100 A parallel (750 VA), with 50 Vrms compliance voltage. This gives six current channels for differential testing and high impedance relay capability. The FREJA 300 has three standard outputs only (3 x 15 A or 1 x 45 A). Existing units can be upgraded.
Can the FREJA 306 test differential relays?
Yes. Six independent current outputs handle transformer, generator, and line differential relays. FREJA Win’s Differential programme includes bias characteristic testing, harmonics restraint verification, and a Wizard for detecting incorrect settings.
